Its tamarillo season and what better way to start the day than steel cut oat porridge with a tamarillo compote. This breakfast is like ordering cafe style porridge in the comfort of your own home and I cant rate it enough! Tamarillos are such a a treat, scooped up with a drizzle of maple syrup or on toast like my grandma likes to have hers. A friend of mine introduced me to the amazing combination of steel cut oats and tamarillos. Steel cut oats are from oat groats cut into 2-3 small pin sized pieces and super health because they are minimally processed and packed full of fiber.

Serve 2

Ingredients

1 cup steel cut oats

1 cup plant milk + extra 1/4 for the end if needed

1 cup of water

2 tamarillos

1 cup frozen black berries

1 teaspoon vanilla essence

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

1 teaspoon maple syrup + extra to garnish

Cook steel cut oats according to packet instructions: the ones I get are of a finer cut, I add 1 cup of steel cut oats, 1 cup of plant milk and 1 cup of water, cinnamon, cloves and a pinch of salt to a pot. Gently simmer on the stove top for 6-8 minutes until thick. Stir through extra plant milk if needed at the end to get the desired consistency.

While this is cooking scoop tamarillo flesh into a microwave safe bowl. Add black berries, 1 teaspoon maple syrup and vanilla and microwave on high for 2 minutes, stir then microwave again for about another 2 minutes (depending on your microwave) and you should have a delicious cafe style compote to add on top of your oats. Dish oats into two bowls, add fruit compote, a little dairy free yogurt, drizzle with extra maple syrup and top with some walnuts.
